Our History
Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Institute of Technology is a multi-disciplinary institute located at Old Pahargaon in the city of Port Blair, spread over more than 18 hectares of an environment-friendly, clean, and green campus. The institution, formerly known as Govt. Polytechnic, came into existence in 1984 with 3 diploma courses in Civil, Mechanical, and Electrical Engineering. Over a journey of 40 years it introduced four more diploma courses in Hotel Management, Electronics and Communication Engineering, Computer Engineering, and Information Technology, and was renamed in its present form in 2010 with the start of B.Tech programs in Electronics and Communication Engineering, Computer Science & Engineering, and Civil Engineering.
In addition to regular programs, the institute offers non-formal courses under Skill Development and Vocational Training through its main centre and extension centres spread across the districts of Andaman & Nicobar Islands. DBRAIT was one of the first technical institutes in the country to receive ISO 9000 accreditation in 1999, later upgraded to ISO 9001:2015 & ISO 14001:2015 standards. The institute has implemented environmental initiatives such as Rain Water Harvesting, Paper Recycling, Solar Energy Harvesting, and a Biogas Plant, providing students a conducive environment for overall development alongside real-life projects.
